How To Get Rid of Fleas
In Lancashire we are big animal lovers; Having a dog or a cat makes a house a home. But with pets comes other unwanted house guests. Despite taking preventative measures fleas can still find their way into our homes, even if we don’t have pets of our own. Finding fleas in your home can be distressing and an uphill battle to eradicate them! But don’t worry, we are here to help with our guide on how to get rid of fleas.

Recognising Fleas
Fleas are 2-3mm long and a brown colour. They are able to jump huge distances in relation to their size. They can often be found on pets and other warm-blooded animals. When not feeding on a host, fleas can be found in communal areas, wherever the most activity is. In severe cases they can be seen jumping on carpets and furniture.
Pets with fleas will be itching, licking and chewing themselves more than normal. Fleas will also bite humans! Although they don’t pose a direct risk to human’s health the bites are very itchy and cause irritation for a long time. The most common locations you’ll find bites on yourself is around your ankles and lower leg.
DIY Flea Control
Occasionally, for very mild infestations caught early, treating your pets and daily through vacuuming of your house can be enough to eradicate fleas.
- Have a vet treat your pet for fleas
- Wash all pet beddings and toys
- Thoroughly vacuum your house daily, paying particular attention to edges and all the nooks and crannies!
We always strongly recommend you seek the help and advice from a professional. Amateur, off the shelf products are often not effective and can be dangerous if not used correctly.
Professional pest controllers have the qualifications, knowledge and experience to deal with the issue, as well as having access to more effective chemicals. Here at Wallace Pest Control all our technicians have the qualification and training to safely eradicate your flea infestation.

FACT – Around 95% of flea eggs, larvae and pupae live in the environment, not on pets.

Professional Flea Control
Professional pest technicians are all qualified, knowledgeable and have up to date training on the most effective and safest methods to eradicate fleas from your home.
Our technicians start off with a ULV (fumigation) treatment which quickly eliminates any adult fleas in your property. However, killing off the adult fleas doesn’t resolve the problem, as eggs that they have laid will continue to hatch and the infestation will quickly return! To resolve this issue our technicians will next apply a residual insecticide and insect growth regulator to all floor surfaces. This will continue working for 14 days after application.
Flea eggs and Pupae are not affected by insecticides, making them difficult to eliminate without the use of an insect growth regulator and residual insecticide, which as professionals, we always use!
And as if this isn’t enough, if you problem persists after 20 days of treatment, we will return to repeat the process, free of charge!
Before The Treatment:
To ensure the best possible results from your flea treatment the following steps must be completed.
- Ensure all members of the household (including ALL pets) are able to vacate the property for a minimum of six hours after the treatment – Plan a family day out, visit relatives or schedule your appointment for when you are all at work/school.
- Ensure all floor surfaces are clear or easily accessible – Don’t worry, you don’t have to start dismantling furniture!
- Thoroughly vacuum, paying particular attention to edges, nooks and crannies – This will help to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment.
- Deactivate smoke detects on or shortly before the arrival of one of our technicians – Don’t worry if you can’t, let us know on booking and we can organise our technicians covering them up during the treatment.
- Have all pets treated by a vet within 5 days of the treatment.

After the Treatment
A couple of simple steps need to be followed after your flea treatment. This ensures the well-being of all.
- Under no circumstances must you or anyone else, enter the property for a minimum of six hours after the property is treated – After six hours it is safe for you and your pets to return to the household.
- Reactivate any smoke detectors that you deactivated.
- Do not wash or vacuum your carpets for a minimum of 14 days after the treatment – This will remove the residual insecticide and will reduce how effective the treatment will be.
- If 20 days after the treatment you have followed all the critical steps and you are still having issues, we will return to the property and retreat at no extra cost!
