Why Are Ants Coming Into My House? Causes, Nests and What to Do
Finding a trail of ants across the kitchen floor or around doors and windows can be frustrating, especially when they keep returning after you have cleaned them away.
Ants usually enter homes because they have found an accessible source of food, water or shelter. The ants you can see are often worker ants travelling between a nest and a food source, which means removing the visible insects does not necessarily deal with the colony itself.

Why Are Ants Coming Into My House?
Ants usually enter homes because they have found something they need nearby, most commonly food, water or a suitable route back to their nest.
Worker ants leave the colony to search for food and can travel surprisingly long distances. Once one ant finds a reliable source, it can leave a chemical trail that other ants follow. This is why a few ants can quickly turn into a visible trail across a floor, worktop or windowsill.
Common reasons ants come indoors include:
- Crumbs, spills and sugary food residues
- Unsealed food or pet food left accessible
- Moisture around sinks, pipes or appliances
- Small gaps around doors, windows and service pipes
- A nest located close to the house, beneath paving or within a wall void
Seeing ants indoors does not necessarily mean the nest is inside the property. In many cases, they are simply travelling in from a colony outside and using the building as a food source.
How to Stop Ants Coming Into the House
You may not be able to prevent every ant from entering your home, but removing easy food sources and reducing access points can make the property much less attractive to foraging ants.
- Clean up food and spills promptly. Wipe down worktops, sweep floors and pay particular attention to sugary residues, crumbs and food preparation areas.
- Store food in sealed containers. This includes dry foods, sweets and pet food that ants may be able to reach.
- Do not leave pet food out overnight. Clean bowls and remove leftover food once pets have finished eating.
- Check likely entry points. Look around doors, windows, skirting boards and service pipes for small gaps that ants may be using.
- Reduce excess moisture. Repair leaking taps or pipes and investigate persistent damp areas around sinks, appliances and utility spaces.
Cleaning away visible ants can help temporarily, but if they continue to return along the same route, there may be an established nest nearby. In that situation, simply sealing the entry point or spraying individual ants may not solve the underlying problem.
When Is Professional Ant Treatment Needed?
If ants keep returning despite cleaning, removing food sources and sealing obvious entry points, there may be an established nest close to or inside the property.
Professional treatment is usually aimed at the colony rather than just the ants you can see. Depending on the species, location of the nest and extent of the activity, this may involve baiting, targeted insecticide treatment or a combination of methods.
For common garden ants, bait can be especially useful because worker ants carry it back towards the nest, helping the treatment reach more of the colony. In some cases, additional treatment or a follow-up visit may be needed if activity continues.
